Movie Story
“Shithouse” is an indie comedy-drama that provides an intimate look at the challenges of transitioning to college life. The film centers on Alex Malmquist, a lonely college freshman struggling to adapt to his new life away from home. Alex feels out of place and spends most of his time in his dorm room, unable to connect with others and missing his family intensely. His only comfort comes from talking to his stuffed animal and occasionally checking in with his mom back home.

The story takes a turn when Alex decides to attend a party at the campus “shithouse,” a notorious house where wild parties are held. At the party, Alex meets Maggie Hill, a sophomore resident assistant who seems to have it all together. The two share an unexpectedly deep connection after a night of conversation, walking through the city, and opening up about their insecurities and fears. Maggie, who initially seems confident and aloof, reveals her own struggles with loneliness and uncertainty about her future, creating a bond between the two.

As the night progresses, the film explores themes of vulnerability, the importance of human connection, and the often overwhelming pressures of young adulthood. The film’s dialogue is natural and heartfelt, drawing viewers into Alex and Maggie’s world. Their night together becomes a catalyst for both characters, pushing them to confront their fears and take steps toward embracing their new lives. “Shithouse” is a coming-of-age story that captures the awkwardness, confusion, and beauty of finding one’s place in the world.
