Movie Story
“News of the World” is a sweeping Western drama set in the aftermath of the American Civil War. The film follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks), a former Confederate soldier who now makes a living traveling from town to town, reading newspapers aloud to illiterate communities. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Johanna Leonberger (Helena Zengel), a young girl who was taken by the Kiowa people six years earlier and raised as one of their own after her family was killed.
Johanna, who has lost both her birth family and her adoptive tribe, is now being sent back to her biological aunt and uncle, but she has no memory of her previous life with them and doesn’t speak English. Captain Kidd reluctantly agrees to escort Johanna across the dangerous Texas landscape to her relatives, a journey that becomes both physically and emotionally challenging.
As they travel through hostile territories, Kidd and Johanna form an unlikely bond, learning to communicate despite their language barrier and cultural differences. The film explores themes of redemption, trust, and the search for belonging in a world fractured by war and conflict. Along the way, they face numerous dangers, including violent outlaws, harsh natural elements, and the remnants of the Civil War’s devastation.
“News of the World” is a poignant and beautifully crafted tale of two lost souls finding solace in each other amidst the rugged, unforgiving landscape of the Old West. The film’s narrative is driven by the powerful performances of Tom Hanks and Helena Zengel, who bring depth and humanity to their roles, making their journey one of both physical survival and emotional healing.
Special Effects
The special effects in “News of the World” are subtle but effective, contributing to the film’s authentic portrayal of the 19th-century American frontier. The movie uses CGI and practical effects to recreate the harsh landscapes, weather conditions, and period-accurate settings. The visual effects are particularly notable in scenes involving dust storms, gunfights, and the overall depiction of the perilous journey across the frontier. The film’s production design and attention to historical detail also play a significant role in immersing the audience in the time period.
Box Office Performance
“News of the World” was released in theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected its box office performance, grossing approximately $12 million worldwide. However, the film found a larger audience through its release on streaming platforms, particularly Netflix, where it received widespread acclaim for its storytelling, direction, and performances.
