Movie Story
Set in 1989, Lisa Frankenstein follows teenage goth Lisa Swallows, who is struggling to cope with her mother’s brutal murder two years prior. Living with her father, Dale, and his new wife, Janet, Lisa often retreats to a local cemetery where she finds solace among the graves. One night, after a failed attempt to socialize at a party, she encounters an old grave belonging to a Victorian-era man and unknowingly reanimates his corpse with a bolt of lightning.
The reanimated man, referred to as “The Creature,” finds his way to Lisa’s home, where she initially hides him in her closet. As Lisa gradually discovers the Creature’s identity, a twisted relationship develops between the two. The Creature, with his decayed body parts and silent demeanor, becomes both a source of comfort and horror for Lisa. Together, they navigate a macabre path, with Lisa going to shocking lengths to maintain her relationship with the Creature, including murder and dismemberment.
As the police close in on the mysterious deaths and disappearances linked to the Creature, Lisa’s world begins to unravel. The film culminates in a tragic yet darkly romantic ending, where Lisa sacrifices herself to remain with the Creature, solidifying their bond beyond life and death.
Special Effects
The film utilizes practical effects to bring the Creature to life, with impressive makeup and prosthetics that highlight the decay and resurrection themes. The use of 1980s aesthetics and a darkly humorous tone adds a unique visual style to the horror-comedy genre.

The film grossed $9.9 million worldwide, underperforming against its $13 million budget.

Lisa Frankenstein marks the feature-length directorial debut of Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams. The film’s script, written by Diablo Cody, was inspired by classic horror elements and modern teen angst, creating a unique blend of horror and comedy.
Final Verdict
Lisa Frankenstein offers a quirky and darkly comedic twist on the classic Frankenstein tale. While it features strong performances from Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse, the film’s offbeat humor and macabre romance may not resonate with all audiences, resulting in a mixed critical reception.
