Movie Story
“Voyagers” is a science fiction thriller set in the near future, where Earth’s resources have been depleted, forcing humanity to look for a new home in space. The film follows a group of young men and women who have been bred and trained specifically for a mission to colonize a distant planet. To ensure the mission’s success, the crew is raised in isolation and conditioned to follow orders without question. Led by their mentor, Richard (Colin Farrell), they embark on an 86-year journey aboard a spacecraft, knowing that it is their descendants who will eventually reach the new world.
As the crew members grow older, they begin to question their purpose and the strict controls imposed on them. The crew’s routine existence is disrupted when Christopher (Tye Sheridan) and Zac (Fionn Whitehead) discover that they have been drugged with a substance known as “The Blue” to suppress their emotions and impulses. Once they stop taking it, their senses and desires are awakened, leading to a breakdown in order and discipline.
As tensions rise and factions form, the crew descends into chaos. Zac becomes increasingly aggressive and manipulative, seeking to seize control of the ship, while Christopher and Sela (Lily-Rose Depp) try to maintain order and keep the mission on track. The situation spirals out of control as fear, paranoia, and primal instincts take over, turning the once-cooperative crew into adversaries. With the survival of humanity at stake, the young voyagers must confront their own humanity and decide what kind of society they want to create on the new planet.
“Voyagers” explores themes of human nature, the struggle for power, and the tension between freedom and control. The film raises questions about what it means to be human and the consequences of suppressing or embracing one’s true self.
Special Effects
The special effects in “Voyagers” are primarily focused on the depiction of the spacecraft and the zero-gravity environment in which the characters live. The film effectively creates a sleek, sterile atmosphere aboard the ship, emphasizing the isolation and artificiality of the crew’s existence. The visual effects also highlight the vastness of space and the sense of claustrophobia within the confined quarters of the spacecraft. While the effects are not overly flashy, they serve to enhance the tension and mood of the story, grounding the science fiction elements in a believable reality.
Box Office Performance
“Voyagers” faced a challenging box office release due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on theaters. The film grossed around $4.2 million worldwide, falling short of its production budget. However, it garnered attention on streaming platforms, where it found a broader audience, particularly among fans of dystopian and science fiction narratives.

Notable Quotes
- “What does it feel like to feel something?” – Christopher
- “They created us, but we’re not them.” – Sela
Behind-the-Scenes
Neil Burger, who wrote and directed the film, aimed to create a story that blends elements of classic science fiction with a psychological thriller. The film was shot primarily in Bucharest, Romania, using minimal sets to convey the sterile environment of the spacecraft. The young cast, led by Tye Sheridan and Lily-Rose Depp, underwent physical training to prepare for the demanding scenes set in zero gravity. The film’s themes of control, rebellion, and human nature are explored through the interactions and conflicts among the characters, reflecting Burger’s interest in how people behave when stripped of societal norms.
Awards

Final Verdict
“Voyagers” is an intriguing blend of science fiction and psychological thriller that explores the darker aspects of human nature in a confined, high-stakes environment. While the film’s premise is compelling, its execution may leave some viewers wanting more depth and character development. However, strong performances from the cast, particularly Tye Sheridan and Lily-Rose Depp, along with its thought-provoking themes, make “Voyagers” a worthwhile watch for fans of dystopian narratives and space dramas.
